SPRING- THE SEASON OF COLOURS

SPRING- THE SEASON OF COLOURS

Spring is here, the most beautiful season of the year which marks the transition period between the cold winters entering into the hot summers. This is when flowers bloom and trees begin growing and reproducing. The Earth seems to be coming to life again! Temperatures are on a rise, days become longer and farmers prepare to plant a fresh batch of seeds (usually shrubs and flowers). It is the apt time to revitalize your soil, clean out the garden and trim old plants. You remove the layer of mulch and debris from the soil so that the top soil can be exposed to natural warmth. Also, this is the best time to mow your lawns and give it a clean and refreshing look. Common plants that are planted early in the spring are vinca, zinnia, portulaca, gomphrena, marigold etc.

REVITALIZING YOUR SOIL

Revitalization counts for sufficient watering, fertilizer distribution, and removal of unwanted guests from your soil. More often than rarely, our lawns lack adequate supply of nutrients. This makes fertilization extremely important in the process of shaping your gardens for the summer. Most plants respond to lack of water by means of reduced growth and wilting leaves. Thus, sufficient watering becomes necessary instead of regular but insufficient watering. The final step for a perfect soil is weed removal. Smaller weeds should be regularly disturbed using a root weeder or scarifier in order to prevent their growth till they wither away. Another non-mechanical way to get rid of weeds is to use herbicides. Your spring soil care remains incomplete without making your loamy or clay soils coarser using sand.

PRUNING TO PERFECTION

Cutting the grass and shrubs to the perfect height and shapes is of vital. The grass of lawns is generally mowed down to a height of 30 to 50 mm depending on how the lawn is used- is it merely decorative or for utility? Regular mowing and mulching cut is ideal in the season. Mulching is where the short cut grass remains on the lawn and thus acts as a natural fertilizer. This is recommended one to two times per week and is gradually tapered down during the drier periods. The timely mowing results in an increased density of the grass and hence a better looking lawn. Similarly, shrubs are pruned as and when their leaves turn yellow. The evergreen shrubs aren’t cut back but are thinned down. This promotes a healthy growth of the shrubs and each pruning suffices for a good two to three months.
